“M” represents the phonetic sense of “love” in the French language, and in Leroux’s work, a concerto grosso, “m” represents the little orchestra and “M” the big orchestra. Alba reflects dawn in winter on the prairies of Northern Alberta, calling up “the majestic beauty in this quilted silence and stunning flatness”. Dalbavie’s cello concerto demands a wide range of virtuosic playing and confirms this composer’s musical genius. Crumb’s work creates almost ritualistic sonic impressions expressing that certain places on Earth “are imbued with an aura of mystery” and of ancient histories that still penetrate contemporary consciousness.

Project TenFourteen: Concert #1 - Sunday, November 16, 2014

The opening concert of Project TenFourteen included the World Premiere of two works by George Crumb – Yesteryear and The Yellow Moon of Andalusia as well as his Five Pieces for Piano; the World Premiere of Corpórea by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz; and the World Premiere of Elena Ruehr’s It’s About Time. Also on the program: Georges Aperghis‘s Récitations 9 and 10 for solo voice. Special guest soprano Tony Arnold joined the SFCMP ensemble members led by Steven Schick, at Cal Performances Hertz Hall in Berkeley.

We are so excited to announce that on November 5th, Cantata Profana has been invited to debut at NY's premier cabaret, Joe's PUB at the Public, where headliners range from fabulous drag artists to world music stars and indie folk legends. For a classical music ensemble, this is a rare treat! In a Distant Land features vocalist JOHN TAYLOR WARD, pianist LEE DIONNE, percussionist DOUG PERRY, and guest guitarist DAN LIPPEL in a one-night-only fantasia of songs, poems, and instrumentals that speak to each other from across centuries and continents. CP brings its inimitable programming style to this new venue with a show that spans Romantic Lieder, classic Ranchero songs of Mexico, Baroque English songs, contemporary Chinese solo works, the world premier of Daniel Schlosberg's arrangements of Charles Ives songs from New England, and American composer George Crumb's new song cycle Ghosts of Alhambra.
